Ask and You Shall Receive

Over the last couple of months I have really been praying for God to give me teachable moments with my kids (and for myself) in helping them (me) understand what this life is supposed to be about.  This all started with God opening my eyes to what my life really looks like and what He wants it to look like (and those are two totally different things).  We have always lived a life like everyone else no real difference (except going to church on Sundays) however God has really begun opening my eyes to how He has called us to live a life in this world but yet be totally different from this world.  And that is really hard to do when you live in the South where there is a church on every corner and everyone pretty much "knows" about God.  So we began examining what that would look like for us and what we came up with is every moment of every day is to glorify God (puzzle piece #1).

This lead us to family worship (puzzle piece #2).  We have always been those people that "relied" on the church to teach our kids.  We take them to church on Wednesdays and Sundays; they're getting all that they need........right???  WRONG!  God has put it on our hearts to teach our kids outside the church which lead to more prayer and asking for God to provide teachable moments.  And boy has God delivered!!!!

We have also been put in positions where we witness acts of kindness which have lead to great discussions.  Recently we were getting off the highway and saw a woman stop her car on the side of the road and run across the street to give a homeless man some food and a bottled water.  Of course, our kids immediately started asking what she was doing.  Great moment of sharing how God wants us to give to the poor and needy.  Also, a lesson I need to take to heart.  Remember how I said at the beginning I was praying for my own teachable moments as well....well this is basically God hitting me over the head and saying, "Here it is, Heather.  You could learn from this lady."  Point taken.

Just two weeks ago as me and the boys were riding with Memaw, we saw an older woman walking in the ran with her umbrella blown inside out like in Mary Poppins.  Memaw stopped and we gave her a ride to where she needed to go and then gave her another umbrella.  Carter had so many questions that lead to another great discussion on helping others in need.

My point in all of this is NOT to show how great I am because that is the furthest from the truth.  My point is I am in awe that these situations have come up (and that I have even recognized them) and how God is using them in changing our family one puzzle piece at a time for HIS GLORY.  And we give him all the glory.

This is just a small change in the grand scheme of things but my prayer is that He continues to be patient with me because I certainly have a long way to go.

  1. Awesome to see how the Lord is working in your family right now. We are getting hit square in the head with the fact that we are most definitely responsible for what Finley learns spiritually since she's not in a kid's program on Sunday mornings here. Praying for you guys as you continue to seek out God's will for your family...
